BLOGGER’S FOG

Sign outside shop in Pioneer Town near Yucca City, CA sorta fits my vacation blogging!

Well, I am not sure how leaving town for a week turned into not blogging for 2 weeks, but it did. If I was really efficient, I would have some ready to publish while I am gone, or even better, be inspired every morning by sites on my trip. Neither happened, so now it is time to get in the mood, or mode, I should say. I started by jotting down a few ideas for future blogs, which means they are not represented in this one.

To get in the proper mode or mood, I will just share a picture I took on my way into town last Wednesday, a day before the full moon. Fortunately, we made it back prior to sunset, our usual goal. I glanced through the car window and wondered what the heck was that large object sitting on the mountain. The picture is not perfect, but you can see how large the moon was coming up from the east. It was huge!

The fog is lifting in proportion to my list of ideas. I will be back to normal soon with ideas for Fall and things that make sense.

And, please visit one or more of my affiliates to the right >>>> because that always makes sense.

It must be cooling down. Cozy is starting to look so appealing!

Middle of September, and even though the temperatures here in the Land of Enchantment are still hitting 90 and above, I am thinking it may be time for some new throws. LABOR DAY SPECIAL

Tomorrow we recognize Labor Day here in the USA, a day dedicated to honoring American workers. When I lived in the Pacific Northwest that meant it was time for school to start and time to put away all the summer clothes.

Well, so much for those rules when one lives in New Mexico! Kids returned to school in mid August and who wants to put flip flops away when the temperatures are still reaching 90? Although I will say that when I took a walk this morning with that dog that lives at my house, it felt a lot like fall.

One thing that probably no one retires after Labor Day is sunglasses. I know I need them all year round, and I even did in the Pac NW. If you want to stock up in style be sure to check out SunglassWarehouse.com over this Labor Day weekend. All of there sunglasses are 40% off. This offer is only good until midnight ET on 9/4/17. Orders over $25 are shipped FREE!

HUMMER VISITS NAKED LADY

Every year the naked ladies return. Just as September arrives, the pond outside my sunroom/office windows welcomes the lovely Lycoris Radiata aka Spider Lily aka Naked Lady. This morning I was so lucky that a wonderful hummingbird chose to hang around a while. I was amazed he stayed for about 5 minutes and had a feast. Thank goodness for a handy cell phone camera!

These beautiful flowers are actually part of the amaryllis family. I love their color.

If you want to add some color to your yard, porch, patio or pond, head over to BloomingBulb.com and check out all of their fall planting ideas. They have many Amaryllis and Lilly selections.

Blossom Peacock Amaryllis

$16.45 marked down to$11.52 for 1 bulb

Marilyn Lily Flowering Tulip

No way I can do the selection justice with a couple of pictures. They have hundreds of choices on sale. And, they even have a zone finder so you know the whens and wheres of planting. Someone you know love gardening? BloomingBulbs sells gift certificates.

WE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE

A favorite of mine, and a great reminder!

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they are eating breakfast,
The young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.
“That laundry is not very clean”, she said.
“She doesn’t know how to wash correctly.
Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.”
Her husband looked on, but remained silent.Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry,
The young woman would make the same comments.About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a
Nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:

“Look, she has learned how to wash correctly.
I wonder who taught her this.”

The husband said, “I got up early this morning and
Cleaned our windows.”

And so it is with life. What we see when watching others
Depends on the purity of the window through which we look.

It really is much easier to change how we view the world, as opposed to attempting to change what’s in it. 🙂
Good reason to keep all our windows clean. Life is simply an ongoing choice.

WHOSE FEEDER IS THIS ANYWAY?

I can usually find ways to keep ants away from the hummingbird feeders. But, I have not figured out how to stop the woodpeckers from checking them out. This one, and ones like him, enjoy taking over the feeders whenever they feel like it. Probably is a lot easier than pecking away at the bark of a tree to find sap. As I was shooting a few pictures, a hummer tried to visit. After all, it is her feeder, or at least it was. There is tree just a few feet away in the front yard, but Mr Woodypants chose to sit on the feeder for at least 5 minutes.

If you enjoy watching the birds outside your windows like I do, consider heading over to myPotsandPlanters.comThey have some great bird feeders.

THE MAIN EVENT

Back in May of 2012, I blogged about the annular solar eclipse observed here in Albuquerque. Without even venturing outside my windows I captured some pretty cool pictures showing rings of fire coming through a window blind and reflecting on the opposite wall. The partially obstructed sun was shining through a tree outside the window. I found it interesting to find an article this morning suggesting an easy way to see an eclipse’s effects by finding a leafy tree and witnessing the shadows as the event happens. No gadget needed. You can also find easy instructions for making your own device if you did not secure some of the special glasses. Boy Scouts of America has a video here that looks very doable.

In February of 1979, I was fortunate to have experienced another total eclipse. I lived near Portland then and it happened in the morning. I am pretty sure the sky was overcast, but it was quite an experience to have it get dark mid morning. We live on a dairy at the time, and the cows got very confused and headed home. Because it was winter the temperature issue was not that observable. I also witnessed a partial solar eclipse in Tucson in July of 1991. The temperature decline was very obvious even with a partial. That one was very similar to what I expect here in Albuquerque on Monday.

If you do not have the correct glasses and do not want to build a device, keep in mind the other phenomenon during a solar eclipse.

  • 360-degree sunrise/sunset
  • Mercury may be more visible
  • City lights or street light may turn on
  • The temperature decrease
  • Amazing shadow formations  (my cool picture is proof)

So, if you are lucky enough to be in the path where the eclipse is visible, you do not have to feel ill prepared. Personally, I think staring at the sun might get a bit boring if you forget to witness the other cool stuff that is happening. The “main event” is totally what you make of it: ENJOY!
